Presentation Topic: Technique for Single Sensor Differential Thermal Analysis The liquid-solid and solid-state phase transformations that occur during processing of metals and alloys to final products determine their microstructure and hence their mechanical and service properties. Extensive investigations have been performed worldwide, aimed at developing practical methods to measure and subsequently control phase transformations, in order to improve the fabricability and properties of engineering alloys, and to extend their ranges of structural applications. The available experimental methods for measuring phase transformations have a number of disadvantages that limit their usefulness for the non-equilibrium conditions of thermal and thermo-mechanical processing. These have resulted in a lack of practically applicable phase transformation data for the modern structural alloys. The single sensor differential thermal analysis (SS DTA) is a novel technique that is capable of determining the solid-liquid and solid-state phase transformations during the actual processing of metals and alloys. This technique has been recently developed at the Welding Engineering Laboratory of The Ohio State University. The SS DTA technique is based on single sensor temperature measurement and computerized acquisition of the thermal history in particular locations of the processed metal. The phase transformations(I¡$B%L(B heat of reaction and the phase transformation temperatures are measured by software processing of the thermal data. The new technique was verified by direct comparison to the classic DTA and to dilatometry. It has been successfully applied for in-situ determining the solidification ranges and solid-state phase transformation temperatures in welded joints of various alloy steels, non-ferrous alloys and Ni-base superalloys, and for development of continuous cooling transformation diagrams. In addition, phase transformation behavior during weldability testing, postweld heat treatment, and casting has also been measured. SS DTA demonstrated high sensitivity to precipitation and recrystallization reactions, and to the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition. The SS DTA technique has demonstrated tremendous application potential for 1) development of new alloys and welding consumables, 2) investigation of microstructure evolution under actual processing conditions of thermal and thermo-mechanical processing, 3) study of microstructure-property relationships and material fabricability, and 4) development and testing of procedures for thermal and thermo-mechanical processing of metals and alloys. The main advantages of the SS DTA include: 1) applicability at non-equilibrium processing conditions; 2) high sensitivity to phase transformations and structural changes; 3) fast, simple and cost-effective engineering and research tool

 

About the Presenter: Dr. Boian Alexandrov Research Scientist Dept. of Industrial, Systems and Welding Engineering The Ohio State University

Our January speaker will be Dr. Boian Alexandrov. Dr. Alexandrov is research scientist in the Dept. of Industrial, Systems and Welding Engineering at The Ohio State University. He holds an MS degree in Materials Science and Engineering and PhD in Welding Engineering from the Technical University of Sofia in Bulgaria. Dr. Alexandrov has published over 50 papers on topics related to welding metallurgy and weldability, and he holds 3 patents. He has over 20 years of research experience to his credit. His expertise and research interests include physical metallurgy of welding, phase transformation and microstructural characterization, weldability testing and welding processes. In addition to his research activities, Dr. Alexandrov is currently teaching the WE611 course at Ohio State.
