* CHAP * COMMENTS

* 1 * Solomon offers sacrifice to God. God appears to Solomon & tells him to ask what he should give to Solomon. Solomon requests wisdom & knowledge. The request pleases God and he grants Solomon's wish. Economic conditions under Solomon are explained.
* 2 * Solomon decides to build a house for the Lord. Solomon requests Huram King of Tyre to send cedar & a skilled workman. Huram agrees. Solomon numbers the strangers in the land and sets them to work.
* 3 * Now these are the things that Solomon was instructed for the building of the temple, the size of the temple, the cherubims, the veil, the 2 two pillars (Jachin on the right and Boaz on the left),
* 4 * the brazen alter, the brass lavenders, the lavers, the candlesticks, the tables, the gold basins, the court of the priests, temple vessels.
* 5 * Work on the temple is finished. Levites bring ark. Nothing in ark but tablets Moses put in at Horeb. As the priests praise God, the temple is filled with the glory of the Lord.
* 6 * Solomon blesses the congregation, praises God for fullfilling His promise to David; and leads the congregation in prayer.
* 7 * When Solomon finished praying, fire came from heaven & consumed the sacrifice. Solomon kept the feast 7 days. The Lord appeared to Solomon by night and said, " If you will walk before me, as David your father walked, and do as I have commanded thee, then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom.
* 8 * Solomon built the cities that Huram had restored to him. He made the strangers in the land pay tribute, but he did not make the children of Israel servants for his work. Solomon offered burnt offerings unto the Lord according to the commandment of Moses.
* 9 * The quen of Sheba came to prove Solomon with hard questions. And she said, it was a true report which I heard in my own land of thy acts and thy wisdom. And King Solomon passed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. And Solomon slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David his father.
* 10 * Jereboam & Israel went to King Rehoboam and said, your father made our yoke grievious. Ease that yoke & we will serve thee. Rehoboam asked for 3 days to answer them. He asked advice of the old men -who said, Be kind to this people and they will be your servants forever. He asked advice of the young men that were brought up with him. They said, Tell them my father made your yoke heavy but I will add to it. Israel, except for Judah, rebelled against the House of David.
* 11 * Rehoboam prepares to do battle to restore the kingdom. The Lord has Shemaiah tell Rehoboam that they are not to fight. The split in the kingdom was from God. The priests and Levites from Israel return to Judah because Jereboam and his sons had kept them from executing the priest's office unto the Lord. Rehoboam had 18 wives & 60 concubines. For three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon.
* 12 * Rehoboam and Israel forsook the law of the Lord. Therefore, in the 5th year, Shishak of Egypt came against Jerusalem. Because the king & the princes humbled themselves, the lord did not destroy him altogether. Rehoboam reigned 17 years in Jerusalem. And he did evil because he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord. Rehoboam was buried in the city of David, and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.
* 13 * Abijah reigned 3 years in Jerusalem and there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah spoke to Israel saying, Have you not cast out the priests of the Lord? But for us, the Lord is our God. We have not forsaken Him. God is with us -- for our captain. Do not fight against God. You will not prosper. When Jeroboam set an ambush for the men of Judah, they cried unto the Lord. God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Judah. Abijah waxed mighty and married 14 wives. Jeroboam did not recover strength. The Lord struck him and he died.
* 14 * Abijah was buried in the city of David. Asa his son reigned in his stead. Asa commanded Juday to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandments. When Zerah, the Ethiopian, came against him with 1 million men, Asa prayed to the Lord. Lord, it is nothing with thee to help with many or with them that have no power. O Lord, thou art our God; Let not man prevail against thee. So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa.
* 15 * The Spirit of the Lord came upon Azariah, the son of Oded. He met Asa and said -- The Lord is with you, while you be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you. They entered a covenant with God -- that any who would not seek God would be put to death.
* 16 * In the 36th year of Asa's reign, Baasha, King of Israel, came against Judah. Asa sent silver and gold to Benhadad, King of Syria, to come against Israel. Hanani, the seer, told Asa, " Because you depended the King of Syria instead of God, the host of Syria has escaped thy hand. Were not the Ethipians and the Lubims a huge host? The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. You have done foolishly. Asa died in the 41st year of his reign and was buried in the city of David.
* 17 * Jehoshaphat reigned in place of his father, Asa. The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he sought to the Lord God of his father. The fear of the Lord fell on all the Lands about Juday so they made no war against Jehoshaphat.
* 18 * Ahab, King of Israel, asked Jehoshaphat to go to Ramothgilead with him. Jehoshaphat asked that they seek the word of the Lord. Ahab gathered 400 prophets that said Go. But Jehoshaphat asked for a prophet of the Lord. Ahab said there was one -- Micaiah -- but he always prophecied evil against Ahab. Micaiah told them to go up and prosper. But the king said that he wanted truth. Micaiah said that he saw a lying spirit in the mouth of Ahab's prophets. Ahab had Micaiah thrown in prison. During the battle Ahab was slain.
* 19 * Hanani the seer met Jehoshaphat and asked him, should you help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? Nevertheless you have prepared your heart to seek God. Jehoshaphat set judges throughout the land. He said. Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgement. Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
* 20 * A great multitude of the children of Moab and of Ammon and of others came against Judah. Jehoshaphat feared and proclaimed a fast. He prayed. O Lord God of our Fathers, are you not a God in heaven. Don't you rule over the kingdoms of the heathen. Is there not power and might in your hand so that none is able to withstand thee. Will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company. Neither know we what to do: but our eyes are up on thee. The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel. The Lord said, "Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude. The battle is not yours, but God's. Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord." Jehoshaphat said,"Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper." He appointed singers to say, "Praise the Lord; for his mercy endureth for ever." When Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, looked unto the multitude. There were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel.
* 21 * Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and Jehoram his first born son reigned in his stead. Jehoram slew all his brethren with the sword. He married Ahab's daughter. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. The Edomites and Libna Rivolted. He received a letter from Elijah that told him he would have a disease of the bowels. It was by this disease that he died. He departed without being desired.
* 22 * Ahaziah, his youngest son reigned in his stead. He did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of Ahab. His mother was his counsellor to do wickedly. The destruction of Ahaziah was of God. When Jehu was executing judgement upon the house of Ahab, he found Ahaziah and slew him. Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, destroyed the royal seed of the house of Judah. Jehoshabeath, the wife of Jehoiada the priest (she was also Ahaziah's sister) hid Joash from Athaliah.
* 23 * After seven years, Jehoida, the Levites, and all of Judah made Joash the king. When Athaliah heard the noise of the people, she came to the House of the Lord. When she saw the king, she cried treason. She was slain by the King's House. The people made a covenant to be the Lord's people. They brake down the house of Baal; and slew Mattan the priest of Baal.
* 24 * Joash began to reign when he was 7 years old. Joash did right all the days of Jehoida Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord. A chest was set at the gate of the House of the Lord. The people cast into the chest. Workmen were paid from the chest. When the work was done, the remaining money was used to make vessels for the temple. When Jehoida died, they left the House of God and served idols and groves. The Spirit of the Lord came on Zechariah the son of Jehoida the priest; but they stoned him at the kings commandment. Joash's servants conspired against him and slew him.
* 25 * Amaziah his son reigned in his stead. He did right in the eyes of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart. He slew the servants that had killed his father. He went to battle and smote the children of Seir. He brought back the gods of the children of Seir and set them up to be his gods which angered the LORD. He went to battle with Joash king of ISRAEL and was defeated. He was killed by a conspiracy and was buried with his fathers.

God helped him against the Philistines Uzziah was made king in place of Amaziah his father when he was 16. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. As long as he sought the Lord, God made him to prosper. He loved husbandry and had much cattle. When he became strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction. He went in the temple of the Lord to burn incense upon the alter of incense. Azariah & 80 other valient priests of the Lord withstood Uzziah. Uzziah was wroth, but the Lord smote him with leprosy. Uzziah was a leper untl the day of his death. Jotham his son was over the king's house. When Uzziah died, Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
* 27 * Jotham began to reign when he was 25. He reigned 16 years. He did right in the sight of the Lord. Yet the people did corruptly. Jotham became mighty because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God. When Jothom died, Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.
* 28 * Ahaz began to reign when he was 25. He reigned 16 years but he walked in the ways of the Kings of Israel. He burnt his children in the fire. Therefore, God delivered him unto the king of Syria and to the King of Israel. The army of Israel carried away much spoil and many captives. A prophet of the Lord said that God was angry with Judah and allowed you to triumph over your brethren. Have you no sins? Release your brethren lest the fierce anger of the Lord is upon you. In Judah, God gave them one heart to do the will of the king. Hezekiah prayed for those that were unclean and the Lord healed the people.
* 31 * When they left the assembly for the passover, they brake down the images, alters, and grovews throughout Judah and Benjamin -- and in Ephraim & Manasseh also. Hezekiah did good, right, and truth before the Lord his God. He sought God with all his heart and prospered.
* 32 * The king of Assyria came into Judah and camped against the cities. Hezekiah said to his captains of war. Don't let the King of Assyria or his multitudes dismay you. With him there is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God. The King of Assyria said, Who was there among all the gods of the other nations that could deliver out of my hand. Hezekiah & Isaiah prayed to God. God sent an angel that cut off all the mighty men of valor of Assyria. When the King of Assyria returned with shame into his own land, into the land of his god-- those of his own family killed him. When Hezekiah slept with his fathers, Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
