Christianity is a historical religion. There were men with whom God interacted. These men lived at particular times and places. When we study the bible it helps to understand the relationship that time plays in our study. It is imperative that we understand that Moses lived before Christ; and that Moses lived after Abraham.

We should not be too dogmatic about dates. The dates that I show here should not be taken as absolute, but relative. Their purpose is but to help our understanding of the scripture.

The first diagram is intended to show the period of time that each book of the Bible writes about. In the case of a prophet, such as Isaiah, the indication is intended to show when the prophet is believed to have lived. Notice there are lots of question marks. There are no indications when Job may have lived.

1 Chron 1, and Lk 3 also contain the above genealogy.

* NOTE: This name also appears in some versions of the Septaugint

but does not ocurr in the Hebrew text of Genesis or of

1 Chron 1:18,24. Although present in Luke 3 in most of

the great unicals it is missing from codex BexaeD.

I took the above numbers and placed them in a spreadsheet to creat the charts below. The first one shows how the lifespan of the patriarchs diminished until the time of Joseph. Would you have remembered that the early dip in the curve was due to Enoch, the man that didn't die because God took him?

Scatter Chart of Patriarch's ages

The next chart will be interesting to anyone wanting to know which of the Patriarchs lived concurrently. The bar chart, which was also made from the spreadsheet, displays which of the patriarchs lived at the same time. It also indicates that Methuselah died in the year of the great flood.

Date of Exodus (Ex 12:40-41) 2728 (Year from beginning) 1446 BC (430 years from when Israel entered Egypt)

The chronological link is continued using Ex. 12:40 to establish the date of the Exodus relative to the time of Jacob, and 1 Kings 6:1 to establish the time from the Exodus, through the period of the Judges, to the time of the Monarchy.

NOTE: At this point it is convenient to view a dual genealogy. Judah is used to establish the Jewish monarchy and the lineage of Christ, and Levi to establish the succession of the High Priest.

The period of the Judges is not well documented from a Chronological point of view. When dates and times are given, it is not always clear what is meant.

Acts 13:20 says that there were judges for a period of about 450 years. 1 Kings 6:1 says that the 4th year of Solomon's reign was 480 years after the Exodus. For additional information on this era, please refer to the Chronology of the Old Testament by Martin Anstey, published by Kregel Publications.

CHRONOLOGY OF OLD TESTAMENT HISTORY THE PERIOD OF THE JUDGES

------------------------------------------------------------

[ACTs 13:20] and after that he gave unto them Judges - about the space of 450 years until Samuel the prophet.

[Judges 2:16-19] Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so. And when the LORD raised them up judges, the LORD was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. And it came to pass when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
