* CHAP * COMMENTS

The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
* 1 * God: Is jealous and the LORD revengeth. Is slow to anger and great in power. Has his way in the whirlwind & the storm. Rebukes the sea and makes it dry. Is good -- a strong hold in the day of trouble. Knows them that trust in him. Who can stand before his indignation? The mountains quake at him. The earth is burned at his presence. His fury is poured out like fire. He will make an utter end of the place (with an overrunning flood). Darkness shall pursue his enemies. Whatever they (Nineveh) plots, he will bring to an end. Affliction will not rise up the second time They shall be devoured as fully dry stubble. O, Judah, Although I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. I will break their yoke from your neck, and burst thy bonds. The wicked shall no more pass through thee. Keep thy solemn feasts. Perform thy vows.
* 2 * He that dasheth in pieces is come before thee (Nineveh). Watch the way Fortify thy power The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob. The defense shall be prepared: The shields of the soldiers are red. The warriers are clothed in scarlet. The chariots shall rage through the streets. The picked troops are called, but they shall stumble. The River Gates will be thrown open and the palace shall be disolved. The city shall be led away captive. Her maids will moan like doves & shall beat upon their breasts. Stand! Stand! They shall cry. But no one shall look back. Take the silver; Take the gold. She is pillaged, plundered. Hearts melt, knees give way, bodies tremble, every face grows pale. Where now is the Lion's Den? I am against you, declares the LORD.
* 3 * Woe to the bloody City Full of lies, plunder, victims. Sounds of whips, rattling wheels,prancing horses, jumping chariots Many are slain, many bodies, because of the whoredom of a harlot. Mistress of witchcraft - sells nations through her whoredoms. - sells families through her witchcraft. I am against thee, saith the LORD. I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show the nations thy nakedness. I will show the kingdoms thy shame. I will cast filth on thee, and make the vile, a gazingstock. All that Look on thee will flee. Are you better than No [Thebes] situated among the rivers, whose rampart and wall was the sea? Yet she was carried away captive. Her children were dashed in pieces at the head of every street. You shall be drunken. You shall go into hiding. You shall be like fig trees that drop their fruit when shaken. Your troops are like women, the gates shall be set wide open. Draw water for the siege, fortify thy strong holds. The fire and the sword will devour thee. There is no healing of thy bruise. Thy wound is grievous. All that hear of your fall will clap their hands for who has not felt your wickedness.
