A Brick Wall Forms Top Of Furnace Bowl

Our Experimental Furance at Orr Farm

Guided by our interpretationof the Lynn Acres furnace remains, Don Thomas and Gerald Parker of the APGS lay bricks to form the upper wall of our pit iron furnace on the Orr Farm in Ross County, Ohio in August, 1994. Many pieces of bricks, heavily glazed on one side only, were found in the Lynn Acres pit during our 1992 excavaction of the furnace bowl. Since it was clearly evident most of the bowl's surface was fire-hardened clay, it seems obvious that the bricks were used at grade level to retain loose surface soil. The experimental furnace was built to reflect the dimensions of the Lynn Acres furnace we excavated in 1992-93.
