America's Mysterious Furnaces

An Archaeological Odyssey Begins

The Overly Furnace, August, 1963

Arlington H. Mallery, William Conner, and a neighborhood youngster pose in the Overly furnace near Austin, Ohio. I was skeptical about Mallery's claim that it was once an iron furnace. In 1970, a British historian of metallurgy identified it as "almost certainly" the remains of an iron furnace. Photo taken for author by James Leisure, who was a photographer and reporter for the local newspaper, the Chillicothe Gazette.
