America's Mysterious Furnaces

Before We Dug, We Knew It Was There!

The New Farm Pond, January 1992
The Oval of Red Earth Outlines The Furnace Bowl

A red oval marks the spot where APGS avocational archaeologists David Orr and William Conner felt sure a pit iron furnace could be found when they investigated the Lynn Acres site in January, 1992. Above, Orr, on right, explains to members of the landowner's family that the intense heat of a pit furnace reddens the earth around it to form the oval. Excavation in August and September, 1992, proved the red stain was created by an iron smelting furnace. A bulldozer used to construct the farm pond revealed the red oval and uncovered furnace artifacts.
