The Old Testament Book of AMOS

-----------------------------------------------------------------

* CHAP * COMMENTS

Amos who was among the herdmen of Tekoa when he saw concerning Israel in the days of King Uzziah (Judah) and King Jeroboam (Israel) son of Joash two years before the earthquake.
* 1 *The LORD will roar from Zion. For 3 transgressions and for 4 of Damascus -- Gaza -- Tyrus -- Edom -- the childron of Ammon --I will not turn away the punishment thereof.
* 2 *For 3 transgressions and for 4 of Moab -- Judah -- Israel I will not turn away the punishment thereof. I destroyed the Amorite before them. I brought you up from Egypt, led you through the wilderness. I raised up of your sons for prophets and of your young men for Nazarites. Ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink and told the prophets to prophesy not. Therefore the mighty shall not deliver himself & he that is courageous will flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.
* 3 * Hear the word that the Lord has spoken against you, O Israel You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I'll punish you for all your iniquities. Can 2 walk together, except they be agreed? The lion has roared, who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken, who can but prophesy. Publish in the palaces at Ashdod & in Egypt - Assemble upon the mountains of Samaria & behold the oppressed in the midst thereof. They don't know how to do right-says the LORD. Therefore there will be an advesary about the land that will bring down thy strength. In that day I'll visit the transgressons of Israel upon him.
* 4 *You kine of Bashan, who oppress the poor, the Lord God has sworn by his holiness that he'll take you away with hooks. Come to Bethel & Gilgal and transgress. I've given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities; I have with held the rain from you; I've smitten you with blasting & mildew; I've sent the pestilence among you; yet you haven't returned unto me, saith the Lord. Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. He that formed the mountains, created the wind, & declares unto man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness and treads upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
* 5 *Hear the word which I take up against you, O house of Israel. Seek ye me and ye shall live: seek not Bethel nor enter into Gilgal. You who turn judgement into wormwood, and leave off righteousness, seek him that made the 7 stars and Orion. The LORD is his name. You have built houses of stone but you will not live in them. I know your manifold transgressions. Seek good, & not evil that ye may live. Wailing will be in all streets for I'll pass through you, saith the LORD. Though you offer me burnt offerings, I will not accept them. You have born the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun - Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus saith the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.
* 6 *Woe to them that are at ease in Zion. You that put away the evil day, lie on beds of ivory, chant to the sound of the viol, drink wine in bowls, and annoint themselves with ointments but are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. They shall go captive with the first. The Lord God has sworn to deliver up the city with all that is therein. Ye have turned judgment into gall. I will raise up against you a nation that will afflict you saith the LORD the God of hosts.
* 7 *The Lord shewed me that he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the later growth. When they had finished eating, I said, "O Lord forgive. By whom shall Jacob arise - for he is small." The Lord repented for this. The Lord showed me that he called to contend by fire. Then I said, "O Lord forgive. By whom shall Jacob arise - for he is small." The Lord repented for this. The Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline-with a plumbline in his hand. "Amos, what do you see? I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel. I won't pass by them any more." Amaziah, priest of Bethel, sent to Jeroboam king of Israel saying, "Amos has conspired against you. He has said that Jeroboam will die by the sword & Israel will be led captive" Amaziah told Amos to flee to Judah and prophesy there, but don't prophesy any more at Bethel. Amos answered, "I was no prophet nor the son of a prophet. The Lord told me to go, prophesy to my people Israel. Hear thou the word of the LORD. Your wife will be a harlot in the city. Your sons & daughters will die by the sword. Israel will surely go into captivity.
* 8 *The Lord showed me a basket of summer fruit and asked me what I saw? The end is come on my people Israel. I won't pass by them any more. Listen - you that swallow up the needy; that say when will the new moon be gone that we can sell corn; that make the ephah small & the shekel great & falsify the balances; The Lord has said that he will not forget their works. I will turn your feasts into mourning. The days come that I will send a famine in the land -- not of bread or water -- but of hearing the words of the LORD:
* 9 *I saw the Lord standing on the alter and he said, "I will slay the last of them with the sword: If they dig into hell, my hand will take them, if they climb to heaven, I will bring them down. If they be hid from my sight at the bottom of the sea, I will command the serpent & he will bite them: I will set my eyes on them for evil and not good. The eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom, & I'll destoy it off the face of the earth; saving I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob. All the sinners of my people that say the evil will not overtake us will die by the sword. In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David and build it as in the days of old. The days come that the plowman will overtake the reaper; the mountains will will drop sweet wine. They will build the waste cities and inhabit them; They will plant vineyards and gardens and eat & drink of them. I will plant them on their land and they will not be pulled up out the land which I have given them saith the LORD thy God.

The Old Testament Book of Obadiah

The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom; I've made you small among the heathen: You're greatly despised. The pride of your heart has deceived you. Though you exalt yourself as the eagle I will bring you down. Those that have eaten your bread have laid a wound under you. Shall not I in that day destroy the wise out of Edom. Shame will cover you because of your violence against your brother Jacob. You rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction: You should not have laid hands on their substance; You should not have cut off those that escaped nor delivered those that did remain. As you have done, it will be done unto thee: Your reward shall return upon your own head. But on Mount Zion will be deliverance and holiness and the house of Jacob will possess their possessions. The house will Jacob will be a fire & the house of Esau for stubble, and they will kindle in them and devour them.
