The Old Testament Book of Joel

Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth of he will return and repent , and leave a blessing behind him; ...

Joel 2: 12-14

* CHAP * COMMENTS

The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
* 1 *Has this been in your days or the days of your fathers. Tell your children of it and let them tell their children & grandchildren. What the palmerworm has left the locust has eaten; what the locust left the cankerworm has eaten and the caterpiller has eaten what was left. A nation without number has come upon my land. The field is wasted. The harvest of the field has perished. Gather all the inhabitants into the house of the LORD. Alas - the day of the LORD is at hand. The seed is rotten. The barns are broken. The beasts groan because they've no pasture. To the LORD, I and the beasts also will cry.
* 2 *Sound an alarm in my holy mountain. The day of the LORD cometh. A great and a strong people whose appearance is as horses & horsemen, so shall they run. They shall not break their ranks. The earth will quake before them. The day of the LORD is great & very terrible; who can abide it? The LORD says turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, weeping, & mourning. Rend your heart - not your garments. Turn to the LORD your God, He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger & of great kindness, and repents of the evil. Who knows if he will return & repent? Don't give your heritage to reproach for the heathen to rule over. Why should they say Where is their God? Then the LORD will pity his people. The LORD'll do great things. The floors will be full of wheat. He'll restore the years that the locust, cankerworm, caterpiller & the palmerworm has eaten. You'll know that I am in the midst of Israel & that I am the LORD your God and none else: and my people won't be ashamed. I'll pour my spirit out on all flesh; your sons & daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, young men will see visions. I'll show wonders in the heavens and earth. The sun will be turned into darkness, the moon into blood, before the great & terrible day of the LORD come. It'll come to pass that whosoever will call on the name of the LORD will be delivered:
* 3 *In those days & in that time I'll bring again the captivity of Judah & Jerusalem. I'll gather all nations into the valley of Jehoshaphat. I will plead with them for my people. What do you have to do with me, Tyre & Zidon and all the costs of Palestine? You have taken my silver and my gold. You have sold the children of Judah & Jerusalem unto the Grecians to remove them far from their border. I'll raise them out of the place where you have sold them. I'll sell your sons & daughters to the children of Judah to sell to the Sabeans, to a people far off. Tell the gentiles to prepare war. Beat plowshares into swords. Come to the valley of Jehoshaphat: there will I sit to judge the heathen. The press is full, the vats overflow; their wickedness is great. The day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The LORD will roar out of Zion. The heathen & the earth wil shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people. So you will know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion. Then Jerusalem will be holy. In that day the mounts will drop down new wine. Egypt will be a desolation. Edom will be a wilderness. But Judah will dwell forever. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwells in Zion.
