* CHAP * COMMENTS

* 1 *In the 3rd year of Jehoiakim (King of Judah), Nebuchadnezzar (King of Babylon) besieged Jerusalem. The Lord gave Jehoiakim into his hand. The king told Ashpenaz (master of his eunuchs) to bring well favored children of Israel to be taught the learning of the Chaldeans. The king appointed a daily provision of food. Daniel, Shadrack, Meshack, & Abednego asked for pulse so as not to defile themselves with the king's food. A ten day test was agreed to; they passed the test & pulse became their food. They appeared before the king and there was none found like Daniel, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abendnego.
* 2 *In his 2nd year of reign, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream that disturbed him greatly -- but he forgot the dream. He told his magicians, sorcerers, astrologers, & Chaldeans to tell him the dream and its meaning or he would cut them in pieces. When they told him they could not do it - he ordered them all killed. Daniel asked why he was so hasty and asked for time. Daniel and Shadrack, Meshack, & Abednego prayed for an answer. God revealed it to Daniel in a night vision. Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar that no man could reveal his dream, only God in heaven. The dream was of the last times and was of an image with head made of gold, breast of silver, belly & thighs of brass, legs of iron, and feet partly of iron and partly of clay. A stone cut without hands smote the image and brake it in pieces. The dreams interpretation: The head was Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom. The 4th kingdom would be divided. In those days God will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. Nebuchadnezzar made Daniel a great man.
* 3 *Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold and commanded the people to fall down and worship the image when they heard the sound of music. If any didn't worship the image, he would be cast in to a fiery furnace. After the music sounded, certain Chaldeans told Nebuchadnezzar that Shadrack, Meshack, & Abednego did not regard him & had not worshipped the image. In a rage, he demanded they be brought before him. He asked who was the God that would deliver out of his hand. When the 3 still refused to worship the image, He ordered the furnace heated 7 times hotter and that they be cast into it. The fire was so hot that it slew those that threw Shadrack, Meshack, & Abednego into the furnace. The king was astonished at seeing 4 men walking with out bonds or harm inside the furnace - & the fourth was like to the Son of God. The king bade Shadrack, Meshack, & Abednego to come out. When they came out of the fire, they were not harmed by the fire and there was no smell of fire about them. Nebuchadnezzar commanded that anyone saying any evil about their God would be cut in pieces & that their home would become dung hill; because no other God can deliver after this sort.
* 4 *I, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that all of the wise men of Babylon could not interpret. But at the last Daniel stood before me who has the spirit of the holy gods. I told him my dream of a tree that grew unto heaven and by which all were fed. A holy one came down from heaven & said hew down the tree but leave a stump of his roots in the ground. Let him have a beast's heart until 7 times shall pass over him. Let the living know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men. Daniel sat astonished for 1 hour. The king told Daniel to not let the dream or its interpretation trouble him. Daniel said, You, O king have grown and become strong. You will be driven from men and shall eat grass as oxen till 7 times pass over you till you know that the most high rules in the kingdom of men. O king, break off thy sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor! 12 months later when the king said, "Is not this the great Babylon that I have built by my power and for my majesty", the vision was fulfilled. At the end of the days, my understanding returned and I praised & honored him that liveth forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion & none can stay his hand or say "What doest thou?"
* 5 *Belshazzer the king made a great feast. He commanded the gold & silver vessels from the temple of Jerusalem be brought. The king-his wives, concubines and princes drank from them and praised gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood and of stone. Fingers of a man's hand came and wrote on the wall. The king was greatly troubled and called to the wise men of Babylon to interpret the writing. If any could he would be made third ruler in the kingdom. None could interpret. The queen said there is a man in thy kingdom in whom the spirit of the holy gods dwell. Let Daniel be called and he will shew the interpretation. When Daniel was called he said Let thy rewards be given to another, but I will read the writing to the king. O king, you have not humbled your heart even though you knew how God had dealt with your father Nebuchadnezzar. You lifted yourself against the Lord of Heaven. This is the writing. Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin. Mene - God has numbered your kingdom and finished it. Tekel- Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting Peres- Thy kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persions In that night Belshazzar was slain and Darius the Median took the kingdom.
* 6 *Darius set 120 princes over the kingdom, but Daniel was set first. The king thought to set him over the whole realm because an excellent spirit was in him. The princes sought to find fault with him but could not. They said, we will not find fault with Daniel unless it be concerning the law of his God. They persuaded King Darius to make a law that whosoever would make a petition of God or man save the king would be cast into a lion's den. When Daniel knew of this, he prayed to God as he did before. When the men saw Daniel praying they took the matter to the king. King Darius was greatly displeased with himself and sought to free Daniel. But the men reminded him that the law the king established couldn't be changed. When Daniel was cast in the den of lions, Darius told him, "The od you continually serve will deliver you". The king fasted all night and arose very early in the morning and went in haste to the lion's den. "Daniel was your God able to deliver you from the lions?" he cried with a lamentable voice. Daniel said that God had sent an angel to stop the lion's mouth. The king ordered Daniel be taken out of the lion's den, but his accusers, and their wives and children were cast in. Darius made a decree that men tremble before Daniel's God.
* 7 *Daniel had a dream in the 1st year of Belshazzar. The 4 winds of heaven strove upon the great sea. 4 great beasts came up from the sea.

The 1st: was like a lion with eagle's wings. The wings were plucked and it was lifted up and made to stand as a man. It was given a man's heart.

The 2nd: was like a bear that had 3 ribs in its mouth that said arise devour much flesh.

The 3rd: was a beast like a leopard with 4 wings of a bird and 4 heads. Dominion was given unto it.

The 4th: was dreadful. very strong with iron teeth and 10 horns. Another horn came up and plucked up 3 of the other horns. This horn had eyes and a mouth.

The Ancient of Days sat on a throne like fiery flame. I beheld till the beast was slain. The other beasts lived for a season and a time -- but their dominion was taken away. One like the son of man came to the Ancient of Days and was given dominion and glory and a kingdom that all should serve him. I, Daniel, was grieved in my sprit and asked about this. The 4 beasts are 4 kings. The saints shall take and pocess the kingdom forever. The horn of the 4th beast made war with the saints and prevailed against them -- until the Ancient of Days came. The 10 horns are 10 kings that shall arise and another shall arise and subdue 3 kings. He shall speak against The Most High. The saints will be given into his hand until a time & times and the dividing of time. But the kingdom will be given to the people of the saints of The Most High.

* 8 *Daniel had a vision in the 3rd year of King Belshazzar in which he saw a 2 horned Ram come out of the river that none could stand before and he became great. A He goat with a great horn between his eyes came from the West and smote the ram. Therefore the goat became great, but the great horn was broken and in its place 4 more horns came up. Out of one of them came a little horn that waxed exeeding great. By him the daily sacrifice was taken away.Daniel heard a man's voice,"Gabriel make this man unerstand the vision." Gabriel said, "The vision shall be at the end of time. The Ram with two horns are the kings of Media and Persion. The goat is the king of Grecia. The great horn is the 1st king. The 4 horns are those that shall stand for it. When the sins are come to a full, a king shall stand up. His power shall be mighty. He shall stand up against the Prince of Princes. Shut up the vision - for it shall be for many days."
* 9 *In the first year of Darius, Daniel understood that the Lord had told Jeremiah that he would accomplish 70 years in the desolations of Jerusalem. Daniel prayed to God, praising God for his mercies and confessing the sin of his people; and asking for foregiveness for the people. Gabriel comes to Daniel to tell him that he is greated beloved and to give him skill and understanding. From the time to rebuild to the Messiah shall be 7 and 62 weeks. And the Messiah shall be cut off and the city destroyed. And he will confirm the convenant with many for 1 week.
* 10 *In the 3rd year of Cyrus, something was revealed to Daniel, and he was in mourning for 3 full weeks. As he was beside the river Hiddekel he he saw a man clothed in linen. Daniel alone saw the vision. The men with him fled to hide. I fell into a deep sleep. A hand touched me and said, Daniel, a man greatly beloved. Understand what I speak unto thee. The prince of Persion withstood me 21 days, but Michael came to help me. I am come to make you understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: the the vision is for many days.
* 11 *Daniel is instructed of what is to come. * * (see notes on Daniel 11)
* 12 *At that time Michael will stand up. Those shall be delivered whose name is written in the book. Many that sleep will awake either to everlasting life or everlasting contempt. Daniel shut up the words and seal the book to the time of the end. Daniel sees two others. One on this side of the river and one on the other. Daniel asked how long will it be? It shall be for a time, times and an half. From the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away shall be 1290 days. Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to the 1335 days. But you, go your way till the end shall be. for you will rest and stand in your lot at the end of the days.
